What is a Giclée Print?

A giclée print (pronounced zhee-clay) is a method of printing used to create high-quality prints. The term originates from the French phrase “la giclée,” which translates to “that which is sprayed or squirted.”

Giclée printing began in the 1980s when high-resolution digital scans were combined with archival-quality inks.
In 1991, printmaker Jack Duganne coined the term “giclée” for fine digital prints produced on inkjet printers.
The primary intention of giclée printing is to create products of superior quality and longer lifespan compared to standard desktop inkjet prints.

To be considered a genuine giclée print, three basic requirements must be met

    • The image must be created at a resolution of no less than 300 dots per inch (DPI).
    • The paper used for printing must be of archival quality, acid-free, and preferably made from 100% cotton or rag base.
    • Giclees are printed using pigment-based inks (not dye-based inks found in lower-cost inkjets). Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan, lasting anywhere from 100 to 200 years without significant fading.

Giclee prints are created using a combination of

  • High-resolution digital images (scanned or created digitally).
  • Archival-quality paper.
  • Pigment-based inks.
  • Inkjet printers designed for fine art printing.

In summary, giclee printing ensures exceptional detail, color accuracy, and longevity, making it a preferred choice for reproducing fine art and photographs.

What does FSC® mean?

FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards. There are ten principles that any forest operation must adhere to before it can receive FSC forest management certification. These principles cover a broad range of issues, from maintaining high conservation values to community relations and workers’ rights, as well as monitoring the environmental and social impacts of the forest management.
